SCRUMDILLYUMPTIOUS food
I love cookbooks as my mother did before me. I read them for fun and getting the juices flowing without the calories! The recipes are fantastic and easy enough to follow for novices (myself) and the stories on the Texas Chefs are interesting, too. If you're a cookbook collector, you'll want to add this one for sure. Y'all be blessed!

The Useful Wild Plants of Texas, the Southeastern and Southwestern United States, the Southern Plains, and Northern Mexico
Published in Hardcover by Useful Wild Plants Inc (June, 1995)
Authors: Scooter Cheatham, Marshall Conring Johnston, and Lynn Marshall
Average review score:

A must have!
Definitely a must have for those interested in plants! You'll never look at the "weeds" around your house the same again :)

Extremely in depth coverage of plants from Abronia spp. to Arundo spp. is given, including all manners of uses from culinary to utilitarian. (Other genuses are to be covered in future volumes.) The book is full of wonderful color photographs of all the plants covered - usually several per plant. There are wide margins listing the various uses of the plants (pointing out their discussion in the text), location diagrams of where the plants are found and more.

Although the book covers only the areas described in the title, anyone with more than a fleeting interest in useful plants is sure to appreciate this book - no matter where they might reside.

The book is steeply priced for sure, but once you open it you will understand why. It is extremely well researched, a fact that is very evident throughout the text. Also, as mentioned above, the book abounds with gorgeous color photographs. Had the book not been a gift, I would have gladly paid twice the price for it.

The next volume(s) couldn't come fast enough for me. I am beginning to get a bit worried though as to the future of the series since I obtained my copy in 1996 and haven't heard anything on newer volumes... Even if this is the only volume that comes out it is still definitely worth the purchase.

Congratulations on a wonderful book to Scooter Cheatham and Marshall C. Johnston.

--> Update: The second volume did come out! If you can believe it, it's even better than this one! :D

The Waterfowl Decoys of Southwestern Ontario and the Men Who Made Them
Published in Hardcover by Boston Mills Press (December, 1986)
Author: Richard Paul Brisco
Average review score:

a collectors must
Brisco has obviously gone to great lengths to investigate the history of waterfowling in SW Ontario. There are many facts and figures contained within the text. Brisco himself is an avid waterfowling and collector originally from Chatham, Ontario. The book is full of history of the area from the market gunning days back when trains were the only access to the 70's. There are hundreds of black and white and color plates of various decoys produced by the dozens of past and present area makers. Also mentioned are many of the Detroit factory decoys. Included are pictorials and biographies of many of those makers including a chart of when they lived and died. One can also find many other waterfowling collectibles including duck calls, live deke boxes, shooting chairs, etc. Look for the old photos of the hunt clubs and marshes. A truly warm and friendly book that visits the realm of the hunter in SW Ontario long, long ago! Dale Hainer, OWC shooter@MNSI.net

We Just Toughed It Out: Women in the Llano Estacado (Southwestern Studies, No. 90)
Published in Hardcover by Texas Western Press (April, 1990)
Author: Georgellen Burnett
Average review score:

Tough with a Velvet Lining
This book is a must for anyone trying to understand the West of the 20th Century. Georgellen Burnett picks up where Frederick Jackson Turner and John Steinbeck left off. The frontier didn't end in 1890, not if you were a woman. The women she profiles are the genuine articles behind the fictional Ma Joad. This gifted young historian uses her own "voice of the llano" to tell how our pioneer grandmothers were stewards of the land, builders of homes and people, and the keepers of culture and sanity. They endured; they saved beauty and hope for us; "They...toughed it out...."

His brilliant study is the product of decades of insightful observation and analysis. A highly accomplished poet himself, he lays bare the essence, both artistic and philosophical, of virtually every significant Texas poet of our time. Highly recommended.
